I was at the Goldstone that Sunday morning too. I was trying to remember when the old roof on the North Stand came down as it’s still there on that picture?
I’d say the first one was with the old St Joseph’s in the background?
I remember catching the special bus to Wembley in 1983 from where the Waitrose is now.
You can see how that building has been lovingly cherished since it stopped being a bank. It’s been given a true Brighton makeover. It’s probably what Swansman had in mind with his ‘graffiti is good’ comment a while back!
I was there that day. I recall being stood on the East Terrace. I remember that the pitch was being replaced and had all been dug up, and the picture seems to show it was just soil there so would back up that this was the promotion celebration bash on that day which was indeed a Sunday...
I used to love it on that corner when they had the old fashioned poster showing what the next few home games were going to be. I’m sure someone must have a picture of that somewhere, seems a bit old hat now but it was always exciting to see what was coming up!
Ritz Amusements looked another nice old building that was demolished that could have been ‘re-purposed’. Maybe it’s been built on by now but remember that being an empty space for many years, didn’t know what was there before until this picture.
That roundabout used to be nicely planted. One day they chopped it all down to reveal those pipes and weeds and it has stayed like that ever since. A beautiful welcome to our city ….not!
