The Final Innings. It's a book about the 1939 cricket season - and very poignant it is too. It's a sobering reminder of the lives that were lost. Clearly, Hedley Verity was the biggest name but four other test cricketers died in the conflict.

It's also very frank about the cricketers' social lives - Bill Edrich seems to have spent more time drinking and shagging than he did playing cricket.

It's a great read, even if a little sad

Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follett

That was my last book - I'm now 2/3 of the way through World Without End, which I'd recommend if you're enjoying Pillars of the Earth (BTW the TV mini series from c 10 yrs ago is worth a watch too a decent cast of Matthew Macfadyen, Hayley Atwell , Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell and a young Eddie Redmayne)

First time I’ve been on here, I think, but:

Trio by William Boyd, who is one of my two favourite current day authors.

Really good to read a quality well-written work of fiction

Good story - or rather three stories intertwined - about the making of a film in the ‘60s, and the film is set in Brighton, just to add to the interest.

Superb Boyd book, however, every Boyd book is superb

In my own strange world
Channel Shore by Tom Fort, it's about his bicycle journey from East to West (Kent through to Cornwall) along the English Channel Coast, a nice easy going and informative read about the people and places he meets and visits along the way.
