Very true. I voted for Maggie when I was a teen but changed my views as I got older, wiser, more educated, more travelled, moved around a lot etc.

Interesting point, but I think the way the system is set up so that 150,000 right winger blukippers get to choose the PM is a disgrace. The only way to fix it is for enough new entryists into the Tory party to make a better choice.

I agree to an extent but I don’t believe we are to blame.
Why should one have to join a party like the conservatives to try and ensure liars, cheaters, and incompetent nincompoops don’t end up in office.
Our whole political system is ****ed but even that being the case, I could not in all good conscience have my name associated with that nest of r-soles.

It is interesting that my optimum situation now is to join the Tories to vote to stop a looney becoming PM next time, and also to "accidently" cross the Lib Dem box at the General Election for the same reason.

The 3 last Prime Ministers - 3 !!! - will have started to govern after being chosen by a right wing blukip sliver of the electorate.

Yep, I voted for William Hague's Tories in 2001 when I was 18. Luckily I grew up and quickly saw the error of my ways

I started listening to truss on the R4 interview this morning. I lasted roughly 30 seconds before I had to turn over. It involved a lot of swearing at her. She was asked a 'human question', along the lines of "Is there anything about being PM of the UK that scares you, or worries you?" I think most normal people are always a bit apprehensive, worried, scared about taking a new job, no matter how experienced they are. Turns out Liz Truss is not a normal person. Who'd have thought, eh?

Tricky though when the only half decent candidate didn’t make the cut, one is having his tax dealings investigated, one is a proven liar and demonstrable belly flopper, and the only two left in the running consist of someone who literally cannot find her way out of a room and a man who had to be told by a footballer that children need food.

My point is that I'm much more concerned about Britain First being members of the Tory PM and voting to select the Prime Minister right now, whereas your whataboutery of the Labour anti-semitism stuff is it is mainly about people who paid £3 seven years ago to vote for a man to lead the Labour party who is now not only no longer the leader of the party but also not even IN the Parliamentary Labour Party anymore, while those £3 Trots are basically just shouting into the void on Twitter influencing absolutely nobody in any serious position within the party.

What became obvious in the 2010-15 period was as a coalition thing it was just about workable as they were moderated, but alone they could not be trusted

So I switched to LD. The rest is history with the Tories now, they are essentially an English nationalist cult, the broad church burn down

I'd previously had her down as just a clown.

I now know she is utterly clueless.

It seems to be a 'thing' at the moment that mendacious tory politicians mimic the style and manner of iconic leaders from the past. So..... you've got Johnson aping Churchill with 'the stooped gate' and the half-wave (as well as a volley of one liners), and Truss wearing Thatcher style outfits, being photographed in a tank and copying the very speech tones and inflections of her hero....

Of course they are just pound shop copies of their idols but it does seem to be a sign of the times that they think that will fool/appeal to their base support; sadly they are probably right..

Agreed, there was no political downside to answering Nick Robinson's 'human' question. She later went on to say she was wrong to campaign against brexit when the more reasonable answer would have been to say that she didn't regret it but the reality of the situation now is the one she has to deal with. As for changing views and parties over time, that is just life.

So, yes, she interviewed badly, more interested in regurgitating her pitch than answering reasonable questions or appealing to the public on a human level.

Corbyn did get very close to being PM though thanks to those entryists into the Labour Party. I agree that the same applies to the Tories. It does seem bizarre that political activists get to choose the leaders when most people have no interest in political activism. It’s even worse when that vote is a direct vote for Prime Minister.

I think I missed being able to vote in '92 by about a month. I've lived in various constituencies over the years and generally voted for the best MP for that area*.

*as long as they weren't a Tory.

I hope Rishi wins, does as good a job for the country as he can and then come the election, the Tories time will be up and they need to go into Opposition like all parties do who have been in power for too long. Sir Keir takes over as PM and providing he can keep the Labour Party on the left centre rails, the country should be ok.
