Bad news I'm afraid chaps.

You would think with him living so close to Brighton and with a young family, a season or two with the Seagulls would have made perfect sense.

Oh well.

Robinson shuns Southcoast for South Wales

CARDIFF City have finally hooked their first big fish of the summer by signing John Robinson from Premiership Charlton Athletic.

The former Welsh international midfielder began his medical yesterday afternoon and, all being well, was due to be presented to a press conference today when full details of City's first summer deal were due to be revealed.

After missing out on previous targets Rob Hulse of Crewe and Oldham's Chris Armstrong, Bluebirds' boss Lennie Lawrence will be glad to have made the first addition to the squad.

City have trailed the former Welsh Player of the Year player for months and have been involved in protracted negotiations. But despite indications that he would sign with Brighton, the club where he made his league debut, Lawrence and chairman Sam Hammam convinced Robinson his future lay at Ninian Park.

"He (Robinson) started his medical yesterday afternoon and hopefully we can finish it today," said Lawrence.

"We hope we can get everything sorted out with Charlton because we have a press conference scheduled today and we would like to announce it there."

Robinson not motivated by money

JOHN Robinson has been through enough personal turmoil to keep football in perspective.

Robinson was released by Charlton at the end of last season after 11 years of service to the club and as a free agent was in a strong position to negotiate high wages.

But his move to Cardiff, set to be announced today, was not motivated by money.

He said, "I've never been money driven. Whatever decision I make will not be down to financial reasons - it will be down to the ambition and drive of the club I am joining."

That down-to-earth perspective was forged by the personal tragedy of last summer.

Robinson made his Welsh international debut against Albania in 1995 and became an integral part of the Welsh team.

He went on to become Welsh Player of the year in 2000-01.

But in August 2002, following the death of his father, he retired from international football.

He admitted afterwards that he found it difficult to concentrate on football and considered giving up all together but he battled on and is now set to begin a new chapter in his career.

Ninian Park is under the international microscope with Danny Gabbidon, Robert Earnshaw and Rhys Weston currently involved in Mark Hughes set up.

Andy Legg made a return to the international scene after his move to Cardiff and should Robinson want to, Hughes would welcome a change of mind.

"The door is still open for him if he wants to return," said Hughes.

"He has been a great team mate, a great servant to Wales and a joy to have as a player while I have been manager."

Robinson is known for his boundless enthusiasm and Trojan-like work ethic,

which is bound to endear him to the City fans.

He plays in central midfield but has also played on the left for Charlton and on the right for Wales, including the odd international appearance at full-back, and his versatility will make him an indispensable member of the team.

He cost Charlton just £75,000 when management duo Alan Curbishley and Steve Gritt signed him from Brighton in September 1992, where he had graduated through the ranks as a trainee.

He was an integral part of the Charlton side which played in the Premiership when the club was relegated in 1998/99 and won the Nationwide Division One championship.

The following year he was selected for the Nationwide Division One team of the season.

He scored the Addicks' first Premiership goal at The Valley against Southampton in August 1998 and is Charlton's record international caps holder with his 30 appearances in a Welsh shirt.

It's his loss. The words "so what" spring to mind... Anyone preferring to play for Cardiff, extra money or not, needs their head tested.

Can't say I'm surprised. Cardiff obviously have a lot more money and can offer Div 1 football. I just hope Coppell has his eye on another winger. With Bozzie gone, Robbo joining Cardiff, and the Hunt deal looking dead, who's gonna be our man?

I can only imagine we never even put an offer on the table for him.
Any sort of half decent offer an he would have come for sure.
2k a week would have done it i reckon.
Which when you consider what we wasted on Kitson and Butters last season would have been money well spent.
