Yep, it's an excellent session, although sadly for me I've never been able to translate it into an equivalent marathon time (I think that's more down to me just being basically sh*t at marathon running though and never really cracked it). You really need to do the full 10 (ie 10 x 800m) to see how it translates to the expected marathon time, and run them at a consistent pace. I can usually get through the session in 3.30s or so (with a max 10 second variation) but my marathon time is nowhere near that currently. If you can't do the full 10 it's still a good, testing session. Key is finding the pace that you can maintain throughout the session so there's no drop-off (if pace drops off, you ran the first ones too hard)

What should the recovery time/distance be between each 800? I am guessing a gentle jog for 400 meters? I am hoping it can give me the confidence to attempt the 9min mile pace for 26.2 miles, - in reality that might not happen, but worth a go!

I was reading about Yasso 800s the other week, trying to work it out for a predicted marathon time of 4hrs, so doing 800 meters in 4 minutes. Has anyone else tried these and are they effective?

The idea being if you can run the Yasso 800's at your time, you should be able to predict your marathon time more accurately. Not sure if that is true but something different to do in training.

Given I'm up for anything that adds a bit of variation into my running at the moment, I'll look into it. I've still got a distant dream to get back to sub-4 marathon pace, but who knows...

Work on time not distance- slow jog or walk between 800s for the same length of time the interval takes........should be ready to go again at the end of the recovery

Definitely helps with confidence. Don’t underestimate the cumulative impact of the session.....7th and 8th intervals always seem to be the killers (think with 9 & 10 the end is in sight [emoji23][emoji23])

Jesus. That would be really frustrating. If it is definitely cancelled before the weekend, I'll resume attacking the parkruns on a weekly basis and get thinking about a new plan. Has it been really biblical consistently? In Brighton we've only really had a couple of bursts of extreme rain, but the drainage is so bad it leaves standing water everywhere. Not ideal. But any event needs the volunteers to get it on, it would be no fun standing in apocalyptic rain for 5 hours. We'll see what gets decided but it would be a real disappointment if it is cancelled.

Well, Yasso 800 is a new phrase on me!

Greg Bobkin - I like the sound of your session, starting hard and then finishing hard again. I've never done that sort of thing that way around - I did a 1 min, 2, 3, 4, 5 and back down again purely running loops of the Level in Brighton earlier in the year, the concentration it takes is as challenging as the pace for me. Also, the time that you get out is extraordinary to me!

Bad news, just been cancelled.

To be fair the whole of Watermead Park where the River Soar and River Wreake meet has been underwater since Monday and with more heavy rain forecast (especially through Saturday night into Sunday morning) it will only get worse. On the bright side, you won't have to remember your plug for the hotel!

Really gutted as I've been training so hard, might have a look round to see if there are any other HM's near me in the next week or so and do a late entry.

I did this during my last marathon training. As dazzer6666 says, It's supposed to be the 10th 800m rep which you take as your marathon time. I tend to do a gentle 400m recovery between each rep.

I was consistently doing just under 3:00 for each 800m. This turned out to be a perfect indicator for my 2:56 marathon time.

Yeah, got the text message. Decisions to be made now. For a start, I may target a parkrun I feel I have a shot at dominating on saturday. I hope you can find another race to get into. I might have a strengthening week and then start a new training cycle and go after the Goodwood GP Marathon in December instead.

Bad luck. I was expecting a double good performance from you both. Admire the stoical response from you both.

I'm not cancelling the 4 day weekend I booked at work! I'm picturing a fairly tame and relaxed weekend ahead. A friend of mine was going to get his first motorway driving experience taking us up there and back, so maybe subconsciously I'm not too unhappy not to be a guinea pig on his first experience of the M25 carpark. I am disappointed though, I really believed I was going to dominate over the distance and run another PB.

Bad luck both of you. Gutted for you both. Hope you can find an alternative to put the training to good use in.

Definitely gutting especially as this is the first time I have stayed injury free and been able to train solidly for 3-4 months since I took up running 18 months ago. Was panicking a bit at the weekend as my last week or two have been a bit hit and miss but I flew round 7 miles on Tuesday night and all lost confidence was restored so it's a bit of a kick in the bollocks. No point getting angry though, I'm sure cancelling is the last thing the organisers want to do as they must be out of pocket.

Just had a quick look and will ponder tonight either the Birmingham Half next weekend or Rugby Half in three weeks. One benefit of living in the Midlands is there are so many races within a relatively short distance away.

Every cloud eh?! Shame as I was hoping to meet up with NSC's current PB King but it wasn't to be. Am entered for Brighton next year so would be interesting to meet up with a few of NSC finest that weekend although I will definitely be outclassed in the race.

I think what really frustrates me is that if Barns Green was this weekend, I'd sign up in a shot. It's just one of those things. I'm probably going to pile into East Brighton Park or Bevendean on saturday, on the assumption I wake up in time. I'll definitely be sleeping until midday tomorrow. :clap2:

Absolutely - and when I'm next up your way and smashing into Kettering parkrun, you can pop down  Although in truth, I owe Leicester Victoria parkrun a proper going over, so I might try and get back before year end. Either way, I hope you stick around the thread now.

Definitely sticking around I'm afraid! I love my new hobby and am feeling so fit and healthy after 8 or so years of laziness. Running has given me so much already and is a great release valve during a tough 18 months personally. I am so excited about Brighton next year it's unreal, going to be a mess come race day! Had to come home for my first full Marathon and will be raising money for Bowel Cancer UK following my Dad's (subject of this thread! https://www.northstandchat.com/show...ck-news&highlight=albion+hat+BBC+news+cumbria ) successful fight against said illness.

In other news, just signed up for Great Eastern Run in Peterborough on 13th October. Flat course, £3 parking and only an hour from me so hoping the funny training schedule doesn't bugger me up too much. Birmingham was too shit to get to with no trains or buses that would get me there on time and parking is impossible on HM day so that was out. Rugby HM also looked boring as **** so Peterborough it is!

Ahead of this weekend and any potential improvements by anyone - I wanted to get my PB noted!

If I'm up early enough tomorrow, I'll go after Peacehaven. I've not done that one this year yet and I want to get another sub-19 course on my parkrun profile. My bike's in getting the real wheel tightened (it's been wobbly for a while!) so I'm reliant on my neighbour not blocking me in the driveway this evening to be able to get anywhere other than Hove Park, Prom or Preston Park.

Good table update to help my focus. I just need to lose 6 seconds in a Parkrun in November to get my highest lifetime AG and more importantly jump ahead of GNT for the first time in the life of the table.

Will bear in mind that he may improve during that time.

Well, my East Brighton Park plan failed miserably and I had to drive controversially in order to make Bevendean Down. Luckily, it doesn't go off until 5 past usually because everyone walks to the start line together. I claimed the win, but only because the crazy quick lad is running a cross country race tomorrow so he was running within himself. He could run that course in sub-18 but for other commitments, so I'll happily take the 1st place with a cheeky 19:37. 49 second PB on the course, but the hill was a bit tougher today than I've found it before. I didn't cruise up it this time, but ran it differently from the last time I was at Bevendean. Last time I'd been out to 2am the night before and sang the Only Fools theme tune at Karaoke. Not the ideal preparation and I was down in 5th come the hill, I ended it first and it sobered me up pretty nicely!

This time I led from start to finish, but again, only because the guy in second didn't want it. We had a good chat on the way around, until the final run down the hill when I left him to guarantee a sub-20. Very happy with the performance, and even happier with the Albion's!

Well today would have been an opportunity: perfect conditions and I'd got in some half decent training. But a slightly disappointing 21.56 (AG 75.76%) means I didn't get near the SB. The consolation was a AC win - my 6th on the trot (and the pace is best described as a trot). November is approaching fast...….(think 'High Noon' with you in the Gary Cooper role!).

Just as I thought....you are on the up. You’re on for a SB but hopefully not in the last week of the year.

Littlehampton for me this morning - 16th Sussex parkrun course of the 20 - aspiring towards GNT levels of tartage.
21:47 and 19th place but post- marathon legs bit in after 3k. Lovely morning for a prom run. Having a day off tomorrow.
