I've lived in Brighton for 56 years and had not heard of this until today.

As usual the Americans have to have the biggest and best of eveything. The people of Greensburg Kansas claim to have the largest and deepest hand dug well in the world. In terms of diameter at 32ft it is certainly must wider, but at a mere 109ft deep it doesn't even come close to being as deep.
