Are Brighton's Top-Four Hopes Dwindling?

For much of their history, Brighton have never been a club that was capable of posing much of a threat to the big teams in the English Premier League. However, football can change quickly, and Brighton’s fortunes have certainly turned around.

Brighton fans were full of optimism at the start of the season and were buoyed by an early run of positive results. Lately, things haven’t gone as smoothly, and Brighton’s chances of a top-four finish could be in jeopardy.

Early Success

Brighton kicked off their 23/24 Premier League campaign by hosting newly promoted Luton at home. As expected, Brighton made short work of the Premier League newcomers, dispatching them by four goals to one in a dominant display.

The Seagulls then went on to beat Wolves by four goals to one away from home in their next fixture, before losing out 1 – 3 to West Ham in game week 3 of the season.

Big Scalps

The Premier League is widely regarded as one of the world’s most competitive football competitions. To succeed, clubs must be capable of dealing with teams below them and snatching results from those above.

Brighton’s next two fixtures saw them take on Newcastle at home and Manchester United away at Old Trafford. These matches will have left fans concerned, and they had the potential to derail what had been an excellent start to the season.

However, Brighton overcame the challenge in style, beating both Newcastle and Manchester United by three goals to one. The United result bumped Brighton up into fourth place, leaving fans convinced that they were on their way to establishing themselves as a new force in the Premier League.

Things Go Wrong

After the United game, Brighton went on to beat Bournemouth, again 3 – 1. This put Brighton into third place and left fans elated. Supporters will have been dreaming big and backing Brighton to claim a top spot on platforms like Red 32 sport.

However, fans were given a reality check just one week later as Brighton were demolished 6 – 1 by Aston Villa. Their next five games saw them draw four times and lose once, sending Brighton tumbling down to eighth on the table.

Things haven’t improved much since then. They have played six games since then and recorded just one win, miles away from the form needed to claim a top spot in the Premier League.

Why Has This Happened?

There is rarely one single factor that causes a team’s form to dip. Instead, it’s often the result of numerous issues that compound to make results difficult to achieve.

While Brighton managed an excellent run towards the start of the season, they haven’t managed to keep a clean sheet once so far in this campaign. Leaking so many goals is always going to come back to bite you, and Brighton are feeling the effects now that they are failing to outscore the opposition.

The team has also been beset by injuries, causing numerous selection headaches for manager Roberto De Zerbi. Most recently, star man Mitoma limped off the pitch, further aggravating Brighton’s injury issues.

Is Brighton’s Chance of Top-Four Finish Over?

Brighton are currently in ninth place with 27 points. Tottenham sit third with 36 points, which is a considerable gap. Football is difficult to predict, but the challenge could prove too much for Brighton to overcome.

However, fans can still be proud of how the team performed at the start of the season and can look forward to trying for a top-four finish next season, which will give them a coveted European spot and all the money and prestige that comes with it.
