Was fishing in the canal in front of the power station in Southwick today. Caught absolutely nothing - always the case when I'm using spinners, don't know why I bother - but did see two birds flying around the big chimney on the other side of the water that looked very much like peregrines. Does anyone know if I was hallucinating through lack of bites, or is there known to be a nest on the roof of the power station?

Oh, and any tips for catching fish with spinners would also be much appreciated.

It's only ever times like that makes me want to know more about all creatures.

In Exmoor, during the summer!, we drove past a massive bird of prey sat on a fence point, we are now somewhat disappointed that we have no idea what it was esp as it was only 5 foot away.

Also I saw such a 'mad' looking catapillar the other day I had to take a photo of it, but once again not a scooby as to what it will become.

Have a look at the RSPB website and see if you can identify it.

I've never thought of fishing up the canal but I might give it a go now you've mentioned that.

I saw a few Red Kites over Dartmoor last time I was down there. A truly amazing sight to see them soaring.

In Egypt in April we saw about 70 of these flying overhead

Think they were honey buzzards. Quite a sight.

Thanks for that - I'm obviously much better at spotting wildlife than I am at hauling it out of the water. Was using a "general" spinner yesterday so I'll try a specialist bass one next time. If it works I'll put a couple of pints behind the bar at the Schooner for you, but don't hold your breath....

There's a path down to a grassy quay from just east of The Schooner, and some steps down from the main road too. You can float fish for mullet etc right against the wall, spin for bass (apparently) or leger for all sorts, including dogfish and eels so I'm told.

I've only been there a couple of times after someone in a bait shop recommended it, but I much prefer it to the marina as it's not nearly so busy. Had a great afternoon even though we didn't catch anything, but then caught sight of an Argus in the shops on the way back saying that a whole new town has been approved to be built "on brownfield land at the harbour in Southwick". So it might be worth getting up there sooner rather than later...

its mainly smoothounds being caught at the moment.
plenty of mackeral and garfish too.
i take it you're spinning for bass?
no big bass being caught, only schoolies.

you might have some joy on a low tide but need to cast at least over the third wave break.
the waters very weedy at the moment from the church of the good shepherd on shoreham beach back towards hove so i'd leave spinning alone.

best lures are the abu toby or dexster.

check this forum out for all local fishing info.

Cheers for the tips there i'm definatly gonna give it a go, tried Brighton marina a few times this year but it's been a struggle to even get a few mackeral so far.

At a guess, a Hen Harrier and a Brown-Tail Moth caterpillar (coz they are everywhere) - you could Google up some images to see if they tally...

As for Red Kites, the place to see them is the stretch of M40 running east towards High Wycombe. I never seen one in England in all my 40-odd years until I drove down there a few months ago, and I saw a dozen in the space of five miles.

if you're after a bit of fun, go up the adur.
if you go up coombes road which is opposite shoreham airport next to the sussex pad pub and lancing college, travel up northwards about 1/2 mile or so to a spot called cuckoo's corner.

walk northwards up the bank and theres plenty of mullet jumping about.
best way to catch them is freeline with bread.
no weights or floats, just freeline. use a size 6 hook.

I had a half hearted look for the caterpillar, but couldn't find it.

It was brown, hairy, had 4 yellow dots on it's back, and longer red hair from it's bum.

Yep, there are Peregrines up there every year. They are bit smaller than I imagined. I timed and then estimated the speed one of them descended (their dive: it looks more like it is dropping like a stone) and came up with a speed of about 56 mph, but posssibly as high as 75 mph.

I've had many good days at Cuckoo's corner catching Bass but never hooked into a Mullet so i'll give the bread a go, I've seen people fly fishing up there and allways wondered if they are after Bass or Mullet?

probably if you've seen them fly fishing they'll be after sea trout although i've never seen anyone fly fish up there.

for sea trout, if you take them, you need a game license and you need to check the times of the year you can catch them. think its from may till november. definately not during spawning season.

keep an eye out for the environment agency river warden if you you catch one by mistake on a spinner for example.
you face prosecution if you take them out without the required license.

obviously, you could say you're spinning for bass.
