I read Escape from Freedom by Erich Fromm a few years ago, I think this goes some way to understanding people as a cohort, what's driving their fears and hopes and why things can play out the way they do.
Despite being written in 1941 I think this offers some very insightful ideas.

Thing is there are many indicators that a recession is coming in the US (and we all know what happens when the US catches a cold...). So whilst the economy looks OK, or good even, at the moment it might not be the case in a few months...

I don't think him saying "I believe it was stolen" gets him off the hook, even if he genuinely does 'believe', due to a mental issue, it was stolen, does it?
I guess if he has proof that it was stolen, that might be different, but he doesn't.
