Loved those old Sainsbury’s shops with marble counters and wooden fittings. Takes me back to when I used to get sent round to buy eggs individually for 1 1/4d (a penny farthing) each.
I did go round the outside and took quite a few in the week before the end. I haven’t scanned them and don’t know if there’s enough interest or space on here to post them all. If there are any specific bits then I can post those.
From the recent pics it looks like the hotels were built so close to the seafront that they had to reclaim land in order to build the road and upper promenade, hence the predominance of arches required to create a flat surface. The Victorians and Edwardians certainly were able to employ people...
It’s just amazing that nearly the whole of that stretch for road from the Peace Statue to the Palace Pier sits on a great big void. It does make you wonder just how safe the road and the properties under it really are. I remember going into the basement of one of the rock shops on the seafront...
