    [Help] Gardeners Question Time.

I'm fascinated by the vast variety of hover flies around the garden (I know that's not one in your photo) their role as pollinators, their vast variety, ability to mimic other insects and their weird lifecycle) is amazing.

They're the small (about 8" tall) white ones, they look a lot like wild garlic but with narrower leaves (a bit like daffodils) and come out just after the garlic has started to die off. They multiply vociferously. They look lovely while they're in bloom, but inmho the downsides far outweigh the...

    [Help] Gardeners Question Time.

About 20 plus years ago I bought a gardening magazine that had 12 Allium bulbs attached to the front cover. I now have thousands of Alliums that come up every years for me to dig up and dispose of - and apart from the sackfull of dug-up bulbs that are currently awaiting transportation to the...

Thanks, that's very helpful. They're native biennials and i'm trying to establish a colony in the shadier back areas of my garden. I've removed some of the denser (silver birch) shade, and reduced the beech hedge, and have had some success earlier this year already - also with Teasels. My...

    [Help] Gardeners Question Time.

We had a colony of sloworms in our garden when we moved in 35 years ago and they too lived happily in my compost heap. Unfortunately our cats found them to be delicious, so no more sloworms.

Invest in a garden shredder, it reduces the prunings, it creates compost and its cathartic (and generally enjoyable).

She has a point, it does taste delicious, and the entire plant is edible - and free?

    [Help] Gardeners Question Time.

I planted 24 small Alliums a few years ago and I now have thousands of the buggers (no exaggeration) all over my garden, they're the bane of my (gardening) life. Nice flowers but gawd they're a pain, and they've already started coming through. :flameboun

    [Help] Gardeners Question Time.

I haven't tried it myself yet but I'm told that cold tea (no milk or sugar) works in slug pubs too. I use the nightly torch and bucket approach, and hedgehogs and frogs seem to enjoy the rest - which is why I avoid using pellets.
