The second photo is taken between 1976 and 1983. As kids we would climb up the steps at the side of the viaduct (presumably the steps to what was Lewes Road Halt) and run along the top of the viaduct and look over the dodgy edge. H & S hadn't quite caught up then.

Whether there is truth in that or not I don't know. After all, the war is full of tall stories that grow by the year. I learnt not to believe much of what I was told. Apparently Hitler didn't allow the Pavilion to be bombed because it was going to be his English home after the war (no evidence)...

Can I just say how much I enjoy your comparisons. I do like this thread. Thanks for doing it. I don't know why irks me. But you always put question marks after each one when the place is so obviously the one you suggest. Like above where it actually says 'Freshfield Inn' !

I actually think it looks better now. It must be one of the most photographed images in the region.
