Be careful of the rose-tinted spectacles ...
Not sure how old you are but I remember Brighton in the 60s and 70s, even the 80s, and despite the nice pictures it was grotty and run-down. Like a lot of British seaside towns it had seen better days (and as Brighton's heyday was the Regency and...
Blimey, I didn't realise the Mitre had closed. Spent a very enjoyable and raucous evening in there when we came back from the Highbury semi-final against Sheff Wed.
Wow that takes me back. You can't see the cafe itself in that picture, just the garage, but it was a little wooden hut, (or 'cottage' if I want to be kind) set back from the road. When my parents first split up and we moved to Lancing my mum would often drive us over and drop us off there. My...
Blimey, I never knew there used to be a church there.
EDIT: I've just researched it and apparently the church was still there until 1984! I don't remember it at all.
Yeah, what is that place? It looks like a massive hoarding, all you can see are billboards but not windows, however there's a door in the middle of it.
I was going to say how did you know it was after 1972, then I looked at the number plate on the car (Vauxhall Victor?) and saw it was a 'K' plate - although I suppose to be accurate you should say 'some time after August 1971'
LATE EDIT: Interesting that the station nameboard is in the original...
A pedant writes ....
Actually that 'before demolition' photo is before 1983 as in the background on the left of the picture you can see the Lewes Road viaduct for the old Kemptown branch line. That was demolished in 1976, ergo that photo must be '76 or earlier.
Anyway only a pedantic ********...
Ah fair enough. It was slightly before my time as I didn't move to Sussex until 1965 and first went to Brighton in 1966. In fact my first visit to Brighton and Hove may well have been the Goldstone!
I know the Top Rank replaced the old SS Brighton, but I've been (w)racking my brain and I cannot for the life of me remember what was there before the Brighton Centre. Anybody a) know, and b) got any pictures?
Yeah, the stairs were obviously still there then (One of the films advertised is Cabaret and that was 1972). Wonder how much longer they survived after that?
I too remember him, but he never moved. He died in about 1990 and was still in the same place. After he died a hand-written notice was put in the window asking people not to stop and discuss him as it was upsetting his widow!
