Yeah but ... not really. The larger cars of today don't help, but there are plenty of historic examples of Monaco not facilitating overtaking. For example a much, much faster David Coulthard getting stuck behind a rather slow Bernoldi.
More recently, in 2018 (not historically small cars, but...
They were also 2nd in the Formula E race. So a hattrick.
In other news ... apparently Alpine are seriously considering benching Ocon for the Canada race, as punishment for ignoring pre race instructions to not race Gasly for position. Ocon made contact with Gasly twice on the first lap ...
Forget who it was, but one of the commentary team on the C4 highlights suggested a Monaco-only rule that they have to use all 3 compounds during the race. I think that might be the simplest solution and would create interest via variable strategies.
2025 drivers market is heating up again. The latest is that Tsunoda may be interested in a seat at Haas, as he sees no prospect of being promoted to Red Bull.
It's not been said yet, but I suspect he won't drive for Williams now. I think the FIA refused an exemption on super licence. That being the case, it makes more sense for Mercedes to invest in giving him as much testing time as possible.
A day later...
Rumour floating around that Perez has turned down a 1 year extensions and asked for 2 years.
While I'm here, two new nuggets of news relating to the Andretti effort to enter Formula 1 in 2026.
During the Miami race weekend, all the news was about how several members of the US...
Time to update the 2025 (and beyond) driver changes tracker:
Red Bull
1. Verstappen (contract thru 2028; but if Red Bull implodes he'll go early)
2. Perez (out of contract after 2024); Ricciardo (needs to up his form at VCARB); Sainz
No new rumours at Red Bull. Perez still, for now, appears...
I think if Piastri had started in the 2nd place he'd earned with a fantastic qually lap, McLaren would have won the race. Have both Piastri and Norris hanging onto Max in the first stint, gives McLaren the opportunity to split strategy and force Red Bull into covering only one of them. Instead...
So, let's expand on this a little.
Qualifying: max on pole yet again. Equals a long standing record for the most consecutive pole positions. But let's look a little deeper: Max had to work hard for it, and managed either a stroke of luck or a very smart piece of timing to get a big tow off...
Albon has signed a new multi-year contract with Williams. Exactly what "multi-year" means remains to be seen; so far they've only confirmed it keeps him there through 2026, but heavily implied it's longer.
Ferrari have a big upgrade package coming for Imola. There's a few photos emerged as they've used a filming day to give it a shakedown. They've switched to Red Bull 2024 style sidepod inlets (having started the season with Red Bull 2023 inspired inlets).
The thorn has become a whole lot more thornier. Ahead of the Miami race weekend, a bipartisan group of 12 US congress politicians sent a letter to FOM / Liberty demanding an explanation on why Andretti Cadillac's entry had been refused and accusing them of anti-competitive / cartel behaviour...
And done :).
Think Norris could take a couple more this year. They had the first significant upgrades on Norris' car this weekend. Piastri gets them for the next race. Norris looked a lot closer to Red Bull all weekend other than that rogue set of softs for the sprint Q3
I'm a little suspicious of Norris (sprint Q) and then Ricciardo (race Q) having sets of softs in qually sessions that just had no grip. Quality control issue at Pirelli?
Oh wow ... they didn't wait until after the Senna anniversary was behind us. Official confirmation now, Newey will leave Red Bull:
Other sources have confirmed that he ceases work for the Formula 1 team with immediate effect, however he will continue to work with Red Bull on their RB17...
Jos Verstappen has dropped a hint that Max might be available for 2026. The hot rumour at the moment is a move to Mercedes, taking Marko (whose leaving Red Bull would trigger an exit clause for Verstappen) and as many RBR engineers as possible.
A Verstappen / Norris swap is an interesting...
In more contemporary news: it is widely expected that Red Bull and Newey will confirm that Newey is leaving this weekend (possibly Thursday, once the Senna stuff is out of the way). Speculation is that Newey has negotiated an immediate release, so that his contractual 1 year non-compete clause...
30th anniversary of the deaths of Senna and Ratzenberger at the Imola GP weekend in 1994 is this week. Netflix have chosen to mark this by releasing a teaser trailer for their 6-episode mini-series about Senna, very cleverly entitled "Senna"...
