A great many soldiers have (and were, going back to the first world war at least) been hospitalised because the war was affecting their mental health. I'd like to think we've moved on from the days when people might be shot for not being able to cope.

This is like saying "in this day and age, the flagship presenter of the BBC should not have the flu". Quite aside from anything else, people have mental health issues. It's a fact of life.
