And remember, WE are the elite, the "establishment", etc, etc. They (Rishi, Boris, Rees-Mogg and all their cronies) have managed to convince millions of ordinary folk that university lecturers, judges, doctors, Guardian-readers, climate campaigners, the BBC, artists, equal-rights activists, the...
I agree it's pretty unlikely that it happens like that. But I'm assuming the opinion polls DO include Muslim voters. In addition, there WILL be tactical voting, which doesn't easily get factored into opinion polls. There was an interesting article by Peter Kellner, quoted in the FT at the...
I would hope you voted “Earthworm” in this one, though…

The other complete non-sequitur in this argument is that the Rwanda scheme only has capacity for a few hundred people a year. Even after the scheme gets up and running (assuming it does, eventually) there's a very high chance that any asylum-seeker arriving in the UK will NOT be sent to Rwanda...
I'm increasingly perplexed why this sort of behaviour is allowed. Some Tories have called out Hester as a racist - but presumably only the target of the racism (in this case Dianne Abbott) can actually press charges? If I were her, I would....but perhaps she's wary of the huge amount of vitriol...
It is unbelievable how much time the UK Parliament has devoted to Brexit and related issues (immigration in particular) over the past 8 years. All this time (and money) at the expense of properly governing this country - providing effective healthcare, education, infrastructure, etc etc etc...
There's a good analysis of the country's concerns about immigration/Rwanda etc on the latest "News Agents" podcast....it includes an interview with a pollster (who's also a former Tory party advisor). I had a look on the pollster's website ( moreincommon.org.uk ), and they include the following...
There was never any evidence that the Rwanda policy would act as a deterrent. People willing to risk crossing the Channel in a small boat are DESPERATE. They have also faced many, many huge challenges in getting to northern France in the first place. The knowledge that you may have an...
Good point...but Labour have detoxified by clearing out the hard left. I'm not so sure that the Tories will get rid of their equivalents (ERG types, most of the current cabinet, etc). In fact, it's possible (even probable) that they'll lurch even further to the right with the likes of Braverman...
It’s worth reading Private Eye. Full of articles about corruption and cronyism every fortnight. Unfortunately very few get picked up by the MSM - as most of the corrupt are Tories, and their mates own the newspapers.
Nail on the head. The easiest, cheapest solution was always to simply recruit more staff to process applications. But that would be too humane. It would erode the Government's justification for its callous Rwanda policy. It would mean the whole asylum-seeker issue may very well disappear from...
I think one of the issues for Labour is that it needs to be seen as a credible governing party, and whilst it could probably legislate to break contracts previously entered into, that doesn't look good. There are other ways that Labour can deal with the issue.
It is absolutely sickening what is happening in the UK at the moment. I acknowledge all the antipathy towards Just Stop Oil, but we seriously need to do something different - I’m getting VERY worried about the world we are going to leave for our kids. It’s looking bleak.
True, but talk like that will frighten too many people. I think Starmer’s approach - whilst frustrating - is the right one. Just get rid of the Tories, then you can start implementing progressive policies.
There’s also another option, which was obvious several years ago - which is to process people’s applications quicker!! Much, much cheaper. But with Home Secretaries like Patel and Braverman, their preference was always to go for the expensive and cruel option.
I’m still staggered that 24% of the population would vote Conservative. What further destruction of this country do the Tories need to do before those people finally come to their senses?
It seems that most of the Johnson-ites and fellow right-wing Tories actively ENJOY being nasty. They appear to get a kick out of their hatred, misogyny, racism, etc, etc. I'm genuinely interested in WHY they are so obnoxious....is it their upbringing? Do they ever stop and think "actually, my...
I hope I don't disappoint you with this comment, but my tolerance for Brexit supporters is very limited. Brexit has destroyed this country's reputation, will likely lead to the break up of the UK (and is, anyway, causing unnecessary, very risky, tension in Northern Ireland), has taken away the...
