The logic that Johnson no longer needs to rely on hardliners is simple enough. But presumably he's going ahead with the deal he's already made with the EU. So which parts of the deal are as yet undecided, and therefore in a position to become softer?

But you think the UK will leave?

Well, you can't lose 'em all.

Bite? Vite? Oh, vote  Well MPs would simply want to reject it to stop Brexit. However, as I said above, although that's what they'd want, they wouldn't really want to be seen to be telling the public - 'not only will we not vote through a Brexit deal, we also went let you, the stupid...

Yes (if by legal you mean 'legally binding')

Unless, as suggested above, another referendum is held and the result is not advisory. Boris's deal (or similar) could be put to the people, with it already set in law that it goes ahead if the people vote for it. The MPs could vote that option down too, but that would look incredibly weak, so...

I can stop you there. I wasn't suggesting we had another referendum (and I'm not saying we shouldn't, that's a separate subject), I'm simply stating that we have had a referendum, and although Leave won, the majority of voters wouldn't have wanted a hard brexit. That's just obvious.

Without having read the posts above, my mind really wandered on what the below meant: Having a 12-year-old daughter myself, I was a little concerned at what they don't stop at these days.

Damn, I'd like that to have been true too. Nice detective work (obviously I'm taking you at your word).

Reading back my post, yes that is what I said, and no I realise that not 'everyone' knew, but I would say that those who were taking an interest in the debate at the time knew that Farage wasn't going to be our PM.

    [Politics] Brexit

Yes I agree it needs to be like that, and within those limits a deal could still be good or bad. I don't wonder, I've always known that the majority of people would prefer a soft brexit. Of course there would be a lot of leave voters who wanted a harder brexit, but overall they are in a...

I'm not sure they wanted no deal back then, but I don't think a good deal was ever going to be easy. But I don't really mind that, everyone knew that those claims were being made by people who weren't going to be in power, so they were obviously empty promises.

Right, so because I disagree you're suggesting I'm a child. Great, another childish insult. Johnson is PM, but even he doesn't have the power, as he doesn't have a majority government and the supreme court has clipped his wings. He doesn't have the power to enact any form of Brexit. It was sold...

Those who voted in the referendum didn't vote for people. Boris and co. weren't in charge then and indeed we've even had a general election since then. This seems like a weird childish insult.

    [Politics] Brexit

It would be difficult to put the specifics of the deal to the public, but I guess you could. If the public voted to leave again, on a specific deal, it would be difficult for MPs to then reject it. I'm not so sure. Mog and co were against the first deal, but now they're concerned they'll lose...

But we shouldn't be taking her red lines as a given. They were her red lines, and they've now gone, so it's not really relevant. That's not true, we'd still have been in the customs union while we continued to negotiate, whilst having the backstop, which we couldn't leave without the EU's...

    [Politics] Brexit

If you know that 'no deal' would be terrible for our country, why on earth would give a loose canon like Boris the power to enact it? I think the way forward should be: The Tories start by agreeing a deal amongst themselves, which they believe should (not would) be supported by the house. They...

    [Politics] Brexit

Agreed. What deal on the table? The one that May put forward and saw rejected several times? What I'd like is to have a PM go to the EU, and negotiate a deal with them while having the power to leave without a deal if needed. That way, the EU would at least feel some pressure to agree to a deal...
