Although don't want Sanchez back.
It's fine, wait until late August and then offer him to Chelsea and they'll forget they signed him before

I've never seen rushworth train or play. But I'm keen to give him the number 1 jersey next & have him start every game. I don't think the 2 we have had this year are quite what we need

No. Arteta said they compete, but Reya plays every league and champions league game (except against Brentford when he’s not allowed to). Others on this thread have given examples where the first choice keeper has changed during the season.

To chuck a guy with just a season's experience of the Championship as the MAIN keeper would be absolute madness and quite possibly ruin him. My guess is another loan and then the season after next Steele moves on (he'll probably be number two (he already is that, according to some fans :poop: )next season) and then Bart and Rushworth or A.N Other are the duo for 25/26.
Not as mad as promoting a young keeper with only League1 experience - and that (herberts on here re-writing history notwithstanding) worked out pretty well, pre-de Zerbi anyway.

I don't know about giving him the no.1 jersey - but give him a chance to challenge in pre-season at least. I agree with your last sentence - neither quite good enough; nearly, but not quite.

Isn't it a natural progression to have Rushworth back, as Number 2 too Bart?.....If not then what's the point, unless the academy is just about farming players to loan and sell. Which I totally understand from a business pov, but can't help feeling its just another example of whats wrong with football today.

But what if Rushworth is better than Bart?

RDZ got away with playing Steele (a very capable no.2 keeper) as no.1 for half a season, but we had to shell out £20M to get competition/replacement for Steele because we'd fallen out with our other GK - and if it turns out that we already had a GK about to have a PL breakout season in 2024-2025 that doesn't look so smart.

Difficulty with that is he could well end up hardly playing……..maybe better for us to have a clear no 1 (probably Bart given current direction but Rushworth could perhaps surpass him in pre-season), and have ‘decent’ back up (and not rotating) rather than keeping possibly England’s future no 1 on the bench. Beadle doesn’t seem to be too far off challenging either - no way we can accommodate all three in 2-3 years time, so suspect we’ll end up selling the best of them to a top club for tens of millions, safe in the knowledge we’ve got a ready replacement.

The Academy is very much about individual player development, and not necessarily for us. Only a tiny % of the kids will ever play PL football for us - and the academy philosophy is very much aimed at producing professional players, wherever they end up playing. They see it as very much a positive if a kid ends up as a pro at another club.

It may not happen but I want Rushworth back at the club next season, we can't keep loaning him out forever - time to see if he can dislodge Bart!

If not, he'll still bring in a couple of million, and then Beadle will be looking to prove his mettle in a season or two.

Scherpen I would expect to leave this summer, and if McGill is happy to keep playing third fiddle (assuming Rushworth doesn't join the first team) then he'll keep doing that.
We’ll be looking at more than a couple of million.
James Trafford went for 15m with 4m potential add ons and he only had league 1 football experience.

Although Trafford consistently kept Rushworth out of the England U21 team. But yes, still certainly well more than a couple of £million for Rushworth!

With the GK position, I don’t think that is the natural progression. A number 2 keeper is very much a back-up member of the squad that a manager would hope to not have to actually use.

Steele was an ideal No. 2. Happy to sit on the bench season after season and did a job on the few occasions he was needed.

Rushworth and Bart battling it out next season , with Beadle on loan in the championship and Steele eased into more of a back Up role. Scherppen to leave. MacGill - where does it end?

Similar situation as we had with Van Hecke for me. Player of the season with Blackburn. Followed by a season as a fringe member of a Premier League squad (only made 9 appearances in all comps) and he’s developed and come out this season as one of our stand out players. I’d keep Rushworth with us next year, give him the cup games, suspension and injury cover and then reassess before the 2025/26 season.
