I would hope that if you got in touch with your nearest pub they would quite probably do it.

A few sacrificial butter knives and a couple of bin bags.

You'll be surprised.
Well that takes care of the geriatrics I suppose, but still leaves the problem of the weeds?

Residents really need to stop being such lazy ****s.
The world is changing people like to get in and shut their front door to many nutters out there. Also many of us work stupid hours there is no way I’m giving up a day off to weed the fecking st. I pay the council ridiculous amounts to do that.

You might enjoy it. Bit of fresh air, feeling of satisfaction about improving your community.

Wholesome stuff.

Give it a try ... your world might feel less terrible.

Or just close your door and moan about how shit everything is and feel the same.

How much are you risking?

Parts of London might be different, but this conurbation is safe with low crime. It’s similar to gardening, just a few minutes here and then keeping on top of plants taking over paths etc.

I'd quite happily use an alternative to glyphosate, if there was one that worked.
Which reminds me, I must go and 'pull up' that dirty great verbascum that's growing by the curb outside my house

I know what you mean, but you’ll just be point spraying (Roundup?) at a stem/leaves.

BHCC spray indiscriminately tonnes of the stuff.

Maybe there’s an English teacher out there?

Still in Brighton
I did but there was too much bureaucracy including a training course, storage of equipment, etc etc so I gave it up. Have never seen them clearing pavements and residential areas.
You have to attend a training session to become a volunteer with the Tidy Up Team. You're provided with gloves, bags, a litter picker etc to take home and access codes to the community storage bins. One of the last group clear ups was at 7 Dials, previous ones I've been on were the streets around the cemetery and Preston Circus. You are talking garbage mate (pun intended).

And therein lies the problem. Not having a pop @Justice, but the world is now full of people who do not have the time, along with a very transient population of students and renters.

To be fair, a council of any colour has got a problem with weeds, how do you get rid? Small scale flamethrower works, but insurance would be an issue, and you could not give them to volunteers! Manually remove the weeds? Not particularly efficient and many will grow back in 2 or 3 weeks. Chemical/weedkillers? Very efficient and NOT PROVEN to cause cancers, especially the non gyphosate varieties. Leave the weeds be? Looks bloody awful and has its own health risks.

Get the weedkiller out!

There is a new movement in British agriculture, promoted by DEFRA, with the attractive name Regenerative Farming. It claims to be environmentally sound but is 100% dependent on the regular use of glyphosate on every single field regardless of the crop grown (not inc grassland). Naturally this is also being strongly backed by the all powerful multinationals that produce the chemical. Glyphosate is banned in many countries around the world due to carcogenic concerns.
As consumers the plan is to convince us that this is a new eco way forward for food production. The alternate view is there is an increased risk to human health and a massive backward step for the environment (glyphosate kills everything so habitats are destroyed).
I have connections to the industry and you can see where my view sits. But following on for the relatively minor use on Brighton’s streets, I would be really interested in your views on what is, for better or for worse, going to be a use of glyphosate On an enormous scale. Thanks.

Can’t you just pick it up as you go along?
That’s what I do. I always make a point of picking up litter when I’m out dog walking, usually bottles or coffee cups that are easier to carry and make a difference. I plan a route that takes me near bins so I don’t have to carry it far. If I have an accident doing it then it’s my problem

People don’t have the time, but manage to find 3 hours per day on their mobile’s.
